ELLIOTT DAINGERFIELD (AMERICAN, 1859-1932) GRAND CANYON
Canvas: 32" x 40.25" Frame: 41.5" x 49.25"
The painting is on the original stretcher and has not been lined. It has original wooden panels covering the verso, under the cross bars of the stretcher, but the canvas does not touch them; there is a space between the canvas and these panels. There are numerous vertical or diagonal cracks in the sky at left and right, but no paint separation. The painting is very dirty and with yellowed varnish. There are some possible retouches in the sky just above the horizon line at left and right. There are some scattered retouches among the foliage at lower right, and some similar marks at lower left that may actually be the work of the artist. There are a few tiny paint losses at the edges of the canvas, and there are light retouches to the right edge where the canvas was once rubbed by the frame. The frame is a good quality American frame with carved corners, typical of the 1920's - 30's
